Experience a life adventure of world-class flyfishing, all year round!
Extremely healthy, fly-fishing-only rivers abound in Slovenia and converge right near our properties to form the great Sava River that flows from our mountains in the Triglav National Park down to Ljubljana, into Croatia through Zagreb, and then into Serbia where it finally joins the Danube in Belgrade. The Bohinj valley is not just a source of life for millions of people in Central Europe and the Balkans, but it is also the source of adventure and lasting memories—its powerful streams, crystal lakes, and rugged mountains comprise an alpine paradise that promises renewal, rediscovery, and hope for everyone who discovers their splendour.
Slovenia is renowned as one of the top fly-fishing destinations worldwide, certainly the best in continental Europe. One of the main sources of the Sava River is the Sava Bohinjka River which flows from Lake Bohinj and flows down past Lake Bled where it converges with the Sava Dolinka River to form the Sava. The trophy section of the Sava Bohinjka river is less than 400m from the front door of Farmhouse Chalet Apartments!
The entire trophy section of this gin-clear, freestone stream meanders mostly along the village of Nomenj and steep foothills of surrounding mountains. Known also as the “Institute” section of the river, this heavily protected section of the river also serves as an important research site for Slovenian ichthyologists and entomologists who study the stream’s exceptionally fecund aquatic life. Anglers can therefore enjoy world-class fly fishing along this pristine alpine stream replete with massive, spectacular pools, deep, isolated gorges, and powerful rapids right near the property without having to rely on cars. In fact, anglers can enjoy a car-free vacation, since 200m away from Farmhouse Chalet Apartments is a village train station that connects passengers to all major lines heading to nearby Austria, Italy, Croatia, and Hungary.
The Sava Bohinjka boasts an impressive population of enormous rainbow and brown trout as well as graylings. Well-seasoned anglers with gentle casts and subtle techniques can often catch massive 45cm+ trout each day from March until November.
But it is during the cold winter season from November until March that things really heat up at Farmhouse Chalet Apartments! This is when the fishing season opens for the gigantic, highly aggressive Hucho Hucho (Huchen in German), Danubian salmon. The kings of Eurasian freshwater streams, these monsters often surpass 1m in length and 15kg! While spotting them is common, catching these elusive monsters remains on top fly-fishermen’s bucket list across the world. One of the largest freshwater salmon species in the world, only their cousins, Taimen in the mountains of Mongolia, rival and surpass them. Let Farmhouse Chalet Apartments serve as your portal to this exclusive, coveted sport!
And when the Sava Bohinjka river is too high from rain or snowmelt, the enchanting Radovna river higher up in the surrounding mountains about 30 minutes away can serve as a viable alternative. An extremely cold, crystal clear freestone stream, the Radovna is an extremely healthy stream that has an impressive population of smaller rainbow and brown trout. However, it also has a Brook trout population, some of which can grow to 60cm (4kg)! Brook trout can also cross breed with brown trout on the Radovna, which begets an offspring called Tiger trout, rare and infertile specimens of trout that can nevertheless grow very large and aggressive.
For guests who can stay longer at Farmhouse Chalet Apartments, a trip to the Soča river valley is an absolute must. It is there that anglers can catch Marble trout (Salmo trutta marmaoratous) about one and a half hours away from Bohinj via a vehicle transport train that leaves from Bohinska Bistrica through the mountains. The Soča watershed, which flows into the Adriatic, consists of the Soča river and its tributaries. Massive, aggressive trout, Marbles can grow beyond a metre and weigh over 20kg.
To be sure, we can offer you comprehensive tips and advise for local streams and secret spots, but for those guests who want to improve their techniques and hire a local guide, we can arrange half- and full-day excursions with local guides at discounted prices. Did you come to Slovenia as a beginner who wants to embark on this lifelong passion for the first time: we can arrange beginner’s lessons with pros right outside of the house. Rest assured if you need full fits (rods, waders, boots, tackle) or you forgot your waders at home, we can set you up with rentals at local shops.
